BICEPS TENODESIS

What is Biceps Tenodesis with Tenotomy?

Biceps tenodesis with tenotomy is a surgical procedure that treats problems in the biceps tendon, often caused by tendonitis, tears, or degeneration. The procedure involves releasing the biceps tendon from its original attachment at the shoulder and reattaching it to a different part of the bone or shoulder structure. The goal is to reduce pain and improve function, especially for those who experience difficulty lifting or rotating their arm due to biceps tendon issues.

What does treatment involve?

During the procedure, Dr Heymans will make small incisions in the shoulder area. First, a tenotomy is performed, which involves cutting the damaged biceps tendon. Then, Dr Heymans will relocate and reattach the tendon to a new position on the humerus (upper arm bone). This reattachment helps restore stability and function to the shoulder. The surgery is usually performed arthroscopically, which means using small incisions and a camera to guide the procedure, minimizing disruption to the surrounding tissues.

What can I expect in terms of recovery?

The recovery process varies depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual’s overall health. Initially, patients may need to wear a sling for a few weeks to support the shoulder. Physical therapy is a crucial part of recovery to regain strength and mobility in the shoulder. Most patients can return to light activities after about 6 weeks, but full recovery, including returning to sports or heavy lifting, may take 3-4 months.
