Ligament reconstruction with internal bracing is a procedure performed to repair and reinforce damaged or torn ligaments in the ankle. This technique combines traditional ligament reconstruction with a new method of providing additional stability using an internal brace, which is designed to allow for quicker healing and reduce the risk of reinjury. It’s often used for chronic ankle instability or after a significant ligament tear.
Dr Heymans will make small incisions around the ankle and remove any damaged ligament tissue. The healthy part of the ligament is then reattached to the bone, and an internal brace made of a strong material is placed to provide extra support. This brace mimics the natural function of the ligament, helping to restore stability to the ankle while preventing excessive motion that could lead to further injury. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, and an arthroscopic approach may be used to minimize recovery time and scarring.
Recovery typically involves wearing a supportive boot for several weeks and gradually increasing mobility with the guidance of a physical therapist. Most patients are able to begin weight-bearing activities within 6 weeks. Full recovery to sports or more strenuous activities can take anywhere from 4-6 months, depending on the severity of the injury and the success of the rehabilitation process.
